A Moment Never Forgotten
It was a very exciting time in my life; all my classmates were getting dressed up in their best clothes and not in the same uniforms that we
had worn for the past 9 years. This would be the last night we would all meet as a class before going our separate ways to high school.
As we took our seats for dinner, we were engulfed by the aromas of pasta, chicken, potatoes, and bread and butter. Scholarships, awards, and plaques were lined up on a table, waiting to be handed out to their recipients. One by one we all gathered into the hall. Flashes filled the room as we all stood
in a group, taking pictures for one last time as a class. Teachers, administrators, and staff were anxious to begin the ceremony, and one by one the awards were handed out. As the names were read, we cheered with excitement for each person receiving an award. I was happy for my fellow classmates and enthusiastically joined in the applause as they accepted their awards. I sat there wondering anxiously if my name would be called, and finally I stood up with great pride as I received the “Work Hard and Be Nice” award, one chosen by the principal of my school for the person who shows great efforts and is always nice to others.
Just as I thought the night was over, there was one last award to be called. This was The Magdalenian Award, which is the highest honor that can be given to a St. Mary Magdalen School graduate. The vice principal declared the recipient as one who embraces true school spirit, lives the Christian life through active participation in the Church, displays positive leadership, is academically consistent, and is enthusiastically involved and supportive of school activities. This person is chosen by teachers, administrators, faculty and staff members, and any person willing to nominate someone.
I looked around the room, trying to think who would be the one to receive this award.
As I sat and listened to all the words being read about this recipient, I started getting nervous and began to sweat. The vice principal listed qualities of the recipient of the award stating that the recipient was a participant in the Environmental Club and a member of the basketball and softball teams.
She continued to say the recipient has qualities of kindness, respect, responsibility, and courtesy towards adults and peers. These characteristics were very similar to those my teachers always complimented me on. She continued saying the recipient is friendly, outgoing and rarely speaks ill of others, but
rather an individual who is caring and has compassion. She added the recipient is accepting of all people regardless of intellect, personality, or appearance. Leadership is one of example, and although quiet and unassuming, her actions speak volumes. This person shows a true love and
exuberance for life. I tried to remain humble and persuaded myself that this amazing award couldn’t possibly be for me.
Once my name was called, everyone in the room stood up and clapped with approval. Overwhelmed with emotion, I began to cry as I walked onto the stage. I looked at my mother and father who were also crying and smiling from ear to ear with tremendous pride and mouthed “I Love You”.
I have never before felt so honored and speechless, to be given an award for being the person that I am. This accomplishment in my life will always stay true in my heart because I firmly believe in treating others as you would want to be treated. I will carry this award with me as I begin my adult life, and hope one day to be able to pass on to my children qualities that were taught to me.
